For many the banana and Hawai'i define 'tropical paradise' yet the banana is not native to Hawai'i.

This is a big book with a big name. The World of Bananas in Hawai'i: Then and Now Traditional Pacific & global varieties, cultures, ornamentals, health & recipes but it lives up to the promise imposed by such a long name. For the sake of convenience The World of Bananas in Hawai'i will do for this article.

Reading The World of Bananas in Hawai'i is fun if you like bananas, history, biology, Hawai'i, photography, conservation or cooking – or if any combination of the preceding interests you. Besides a fun read The World of Bananas in Hawai'i provides several things; a course in Hawai'ian history, understanding of banana biology, an understanding of some of the many banana varieties, a course of pests and diseases of bananas, nutritive/cooking with bananas and more. The World of Bananas in Hawai'i could easily serve as the foundation for more than one advanced collage course – yet it is written in an easy to read and understand way. (Sneaky authors slipping all that information into a good to read book!)

Profusely illustrated with beautiful color photographs by the hundreds that are themselves a study of bananas and their history in Hawai'i they complement the well written text. The World of Bananas in Hawai'i takes the reader on a journey through time and into the wonders of these bountiful, beautiful plants and shows readers some of the history of the Hawai'ian people from a unique perspective. This book is very obviously a work of love and respect for both the plants and people of Hawai'i.

Overall Recommendation 5/5  Rated 5 of 5

Highly recommended for plant people, libraries, students of tropical plants and the average person who wants to know about the world around them.
